A psychological thriller from gifted first-time writer-director Sean Durkin - awarded Best Director at last year’s Sundance Film Festival for this original piece. Featuring an impressively mature performance from Elizabeth Olsen, in only her third feature film and the quite sublime John Hawkes (Me and You and Everyone We Know, Winter’s Bone). Hawkins, in a role not unfamiliar to previous roles, plays an evocatively hypnotic and haunting Patrick, a cult leader, conveying a level of brutality and subservient power over his cult members, especially Martha (played by Olsen). After two years of sexual ‘cleansing’ by Patrick, Olsen, at this point known as Marcy May, contacts her sister to rescue her. However due to these two years of psychological and physical torment, her adaptation back into society proves problematic.
