Takashi Miike's bloody love letter to Seven Samurai is his most mainstream film to date, and is by far his best. When a psychopathic tyrant lord seems destined to take control of a shogun clan, one Samurai assembles a group of comrades and they plot his assassination. But the plan to entrap him and his small army in a rural village turns into forty minutes of cinematic mayhem when their targets arrive several hundred strong. 13 Assassins has a great cast, a great script, brilliantly directed swordsmanship, edge of your seat thrills, trademark gore, touches of humour and inevitable tragedy.
