(Tue 5th – Thu 7th at 8pm / Wed 6th at 11am (babycinema) / £5/4/3 TTT/babycinema) (Peter Mullan / 2011 / UK / 123 minutes / Certificate 18)

Desperate to avoid the spiral of despair that shapes his family, bright lad John McGill is determined to do well. Yet with no small opinion of himself, and the continued class pressures he faces, it’s not long before John craves a kind of respect not offered him as a bookish school prize winner.

With its magical realist touches, Peter Mullan’s dynamic delinquent drama is more Andrea Arnold than Alan Clarke, but it still packs a visceral punch. Its 1970s Glasgow setting is beautifully and painstakingly observed and realised, and it’s packed with outstanding performances from its young cast.
