(Alan Greenberg / 1982 / USA)

Alan Greenberg claims that the spirit of Bob Marley instructed him to make this film (from his open coffin) and Greenberg conceded to Bob's family's wish that he would. This was his first feature film and he presents a view of the world that Marley left behind in 1981 in Jamaica, talking to his close community about their lives at a time when Rastafarianism had been until then recently outlawed and in a social environment Greenberg likens to a police-state.

Greenberg collaborated and worked for Herzog for many years. Herzog asserts that Land of Look Behind is not a documentary just as his own films are not strictly documentaries... Also featuring Gregory Isaacs and Mutabaruka.

As part of our monthly investigation into the nature and boundaries of documentary cinema-making, What the Eye Sees, we are pleased to be screening this gem.
