Described by director Gasper Noé as ‘a psychedelic melodrama’, this is his long-awaited follow up to 2002’s ‘Irréversible’, and every bit as controversial.
It’s shot entirely from the point of view of its leading character, Oscar, an American living in Tokyo with his sister Linda. He’s a drug dealer, and she’s a stripper. One day, Oscar is shot and killed, and from that point on we see everything from the perspective of his spirit, flying above the city and keeping his promise never to abandon his sister.
Haunted by childhood memories, gliding disorientated through the neon fireworks of Tokyo’s hedonistic nightlife, his spirit vision constantly shifts between the past and the present, reality and the spiritual, gazing unflinchingly at the sordid and the sometimes beautiful.
This is visually and technically ambitious film-making; intense, hallucinogenic, immersive, and graphic. Love it or hate it, you will be provoked.
