Combining both royalty and disability, this should surely sweep up at the BAFTAs. A touching portrait of George VI which focuses on the reluctant king's paralysing lack of confidence and his unlikely friendship with an Australian speech therapist enlisted to cure his stammer.

Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush provide much odd-couple comedy, and this contrasts nicely with the stuffiness of the royal house, the looming threat of war, and the tension which builds towards the king's big moment addressing the nation.
