Harmony Korine's Gummo was controversial from the start. The film won major prizes at the Venice and Rotterdam film festivals, but critics slated it as 'worst movie of the year' and 'genuinely disgusting'. Set in Xenia, a
tornado-stricken town in Ohio, it presents a series of vignettes from the point of view of teenagers - two paint-sniffing adolescent boys, two teenage girls exploring beauty and sexuality... the scenes are remarkable for their realism and lack of narrative rhythm, neither romanticising nor patronising.
