Powell and Pressburgers' story of a ballerina's fatal obsession with her art is a milestone in the creative use of colour in film. Moira Shearer is the rising young ballerina who falls in love with a rising young composer. She must choose between him and a career possessively controlled by the impresario - and this story acts as a frame for the ballet. Jack Cardiff's fluid camera and bold use of colour created a unity from naturalistic, staged and dream sequences. Through the shoes, the hair and the stage lights, the emotions of the colour red are used to striking effect.
