American: The Bill Hicks Story
Matt Harlock and Paul Thomas/ 2009/ UK/ 107 min/ cert. 15
He’s Bill Hicks, and he’s dead now. But despite pancreatic cancer having robbed us of his brilliant humour and clarity of vision in 1994 (-aged only
thirty-two), this renegade comedian remains iconic, revered, and relevant.
Like the man himself, this definitive documentary is both highly entertaining and thought provoking. Drawing from extensive interviews with Hicks’ closest friends and family, the directors use a mixture of innovative animation and unseen archive footage to give a warm and unique insight into the man still widely regarded as one of, if not the, greatest comedians of modern times.
For all his apparent rage and frustration with what he saw as a world corrupted by government, commercialism, and cultural mediocrity, Bill Hicks ultimately offered a message of truth, hope, and love. And, of course, dick jokes.
