(Mon 28th - Wed 30th / 8pm / Wed 30th 11am [babycinema] / £4/£3/£2 TTT) (Samuel Maoz / Germany / Israel / France / Lebanon / 2009 / Cert 15/ English subtitles)
Winner of the Golden Lion at this year's Venice film festival, director Samuel Maoz's intense depiction of his own experiences during the first Lebanon war cuts a claustrophobic and gripping path as it follows a small platoon into a war torn and hostile town, with a bunch of increasingly unstable and bickering comrades.
Setting all of his action inside the confines of a sweaty, noisy and
ill-equipped tank, Maoz throws us headlong into the intense fear and uncertainty of combat, with threat ever present outside of our restricted visual range, the stench of death and encroaching insanity increasing to a fever pitch as the mission breaks down into chaos and entrapment. War seen as it can only be: Pitch black, and deadly.
