Samson and Delilah are Australian Aborigine teenagers living in the same rural settlement. Samson needs petrol fumes to get him through the day. Delilah spurns his awkward affection until she is ostracised and they both make a break for the city. Director Warwick Thornton uses very little dialogue in the film. The long shots and the silence has the effect of drawing the viewer into the couples' slow, spaced-out days, and accentuating the words that are spoken and the small acts of tenderness which the couple share. A love story with political clout, this is a quietly powerful film which sheds light on the fate of young Aborigines struggling in white Australia.
