Director Peter Greenaway (The Pillow Book, The Cook the Thief His Wife & Her Lover) returns with Nightwatching, a beguiling film documentary straight out of the academic leftfield. Like The Draughtsman's Contract, Nightwatching sees Greenaway again throw himself into period restoration, this time in pursuit of the legend that is Rembrandt.
The film is dedicated to the controversy and mystery surrounding the most famous artist and his work and uses The Night-Watch as a turning point and historical resolution of the mystery of how Rembrant suddenly became destitute and died so. This is layered with a Greenaway construct of keeping in the mind the artist as outsider and the cinema as artifice..
