The second part of a two-part programme of screenings showcasing films involving local and international practitioners of experimental sound and image. Films to be shown tonight will be;
John Grzinich, Nodar Flowlines: Village Aqueduct Stream interventions (2008) – 14mins
The aim of the project was to carry out a sonic and visual survey of the landscape around the local village through a series site-specific recording session. In particular comparing and contrasting the geographic lines gaused by the natural water flows towards the river at the bottom of the valley versus the man-made aqueduct that transverses the vertical lines and brings water into the village. Both of these phenomenon rely on natural forces yet one was created specifically for the local inhabitants. The surveys included recording methods that stem from the types of flow, drawing inspiration from the behavior patterns of how the flows shape the landscape. The base sound material relied on the use of ambient sounds, found objects (natural and man-made materials) and human intervention. This visual material focused on documenting the various aspects of the locations and processes used.
Steve Roden, Three Landscapes (2007) – 30mins
A film/sound work inspired by the landscape of Norway and the 100th anniversary of the death of Edvard Grieg. The images are related to three landscapes - a map of the area visited, a text related to waterfalls and organ sounds, and a player piano roll. The audio was generated using field recordings from the journey, moving from glaciers in remote wilderness to a Greig's small writing cabin in Bergen. With special thanks to Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects for the donation of this film.
