Based loosely on the real-life crimes of Henry Lee Lucas, John McNaughton's depiction of a sociopath on a killing spree still has the power to shock. Michael Rooker gives a chilling performance as Henry and McNaughton avoids the dramatic devices which would normally signpost the violence as fiction. As a result the horror has a disturbing realism which The British Board of Film Classification struggled with, initially refusing to release it at all after their American equivalent claimed that they "wouldn't know where to begin cutting." An intelligent and unnerving film which you might not want to walk home alone from.
