Unless you’ve been involved in an intense and top-heavy relationship with a massive rock for the past few years, you’ll know by now that as original songcrafters go, few in these parts can step to Sam “SJ Esau” Wisternoff. With this fact comfortably proven after three top-flight long player releases (the last two of which, “Wrong Faced Cat Feed Collapse” (2007) and “Small Vessel” (2008) have been released worldwide by feted Californian imprint Anticon), now Wisternoff takes a moment to showcase his flair for recasting other people’s works in the inimitable Esau mould. “The Gist”, the new SJ Esau mini-album, features typically inventive cover versions of a score of artful pop treats from the likes of BROADCAST, DEERHOOF, THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS, HAROUMI HOSONO (YELLOW MAGIC ORCHESTRA) and BUCKY. Tonight is a celebration of its release, and promises a full SJ Esau set (featuring the all-new Overbearingly Stimulating SJ Esau Visual Ordeal), screenings of two exclusive self-produced pop videos from the man himself (including the ingenious DIY clip for “Part Of A Diagram”, recently released on 7” by One Inch Badge Records), and tasty micro-sets of handpicked covers from a clutch of the boldest talents to be found out west, including FREEZE PUPPY, TWOCSINAK, SILVER STARS OF KETCHIKAN, WAR AGAINST SLEEP, ANNA PHALACTIC, TEAM BRICK and MEN DIAMLER. Plus covers-only DJ selectors, DVD giveaways and plenty more coverage besides.
