(Gus Van Sant / 2008 / USA / 128 minutes / certificate 15)

Gus Van Sant returns to the mainstream with this fascinating and highly acclaimed bio-pic of Harvey Milk. After moving to San Francisco in the 1970's, middle-aged New Yorker Milk became a gay rights activist and in 1977 the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in the USA. The following year, both he and the city's mayor, George Moscone, were shot dead by former city supervisor Dan White. Sean Penn gives a vibrant, compelling portrayal of Milk and Gus Van Sant captures the essence of the time both in the fine details the broader strokes.
