Waltz With Bashir explores director's Ari Folman's memories of serving with the Israeli army in the 1980s, in particular his experience of the invasion of Lebanon and the massacres at the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps, events of which he could remember little. His journey into history and memory uncovers a repressed and painful past, all portrayed in visually stunning animation, which renders the violence and chaos of war with a unique and vivid realism.
"one of the most extraordinary films of this or any year . . . It tells a series of true stories, yet unspools like a hallucination. It is gripping, painful, and lingers in the mind long after the credits roll. It will surely take its place alongside The Battle Of Algiers and Apocalypse Now as among the very best films about conflict. For it wrestles with two of the great themes - memory and war - and dwells on the collision of the two." - Jonathan Freedland, The Guardian
