David Cronenberg's suitably dark tribute to William H Burroughs is screened as part of The Cube's monthly Jazz on Film night.

Naked Lunch is an amalgamation of Cronenberg's interpretation and experience of reading Burroughs legendary novel and Burroughs own life and drug-induced writing processes. The result is a paranoid fantasy about Bill Lee (Peter Weller), a writer, a part-time bug exterminator and full-time drug addict. After accidentally shooting his wife and witnessing his typewriter transform into a cockroach, he takes a trip into the nightmarish netherworld of the Interzone, pursuing a mysterious project that leads him to confront sinister cabals and giant talking bugs while fighting his own private demons. The film's striking visuals are enhanced by Howard Shore's fitting jazz score, featuring sax solos by Ornette Coleman.
