Like his landmark debut Swoon (1992), Tom Kalin's long-awaited follow-up is based on a shocking true story, adapting Natalie Robins and Steven M L Aronson’s book. The film follows the notorious family tragedy of the beautiful but damaged Barbara Daly (Julianne Moore), who married above her class to the wealthy Brooks Baekeland (Stephen Dillane), heir to the Bakelite plastics fortune. Their only child, Tony, is a failure in his father's eyes, and is smothered by his lonely mother. The fact that he's homosexual only makes him feel more alienated.
