(Olivier Assayas / France / 2008 / 103 mins / Cert 12A)

Olivier Assayas’s most satisfying film for some while, this is a warm, wise drama about the tensions and mysteries of family life. Three siblings - lecturer Frédéric (Charles Berling), New York-based designer Adrienne (Juliette Binoche)and Jérémie (Jérémie Renier) celebrate their widowed mother's birthday in the country. When the mother dies shortly after, the three come together again to decide what to do with the house, its valuable contents, and Hélène’s faithful housekeeper Eloise… the film explores grief, interactions and motivations,blood-ties and family secrets. It is beautifully performed, intelligently written and fluently directed.
