Terry Gilliam’s outlandish and surreal vision has been one of the greatest influences on fantasy cinema for the past 35 years. From the early flippancy of his hurried animated inserts for Monty Python, to the terrifying and complex Alice-in-Wonderland worlds of Tideland, his innovative work has explored the limits of the medium whilst at all times remaining accessible and – for the most part - fun. Now in his 60s Gilliam is still going strong, and as he prepares to finish his up-coming epic ‘The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus’, the Cube is proud to present a showcase of some of his early work.
As a free adaptation of the poem Jabberwocky, Gilliam’s debut feature shows a fully realised understanding of the inner darkness of Lewis Carroll’s apparent whimsy, showing a mud soaked medieval period where death goes in hand with corruption, and love’s impossible dream is quashed by forces beyond our control. The film is also a beautiful swansong to the English music hall, with a cast featuring greats such as Max Wall and John Le Messeurier.
