Based on Jean-Dominique Bauby’s award winning memoir, Schnabel’s film follows the story of the French journalist’s struggle to come to terms with a
debilitating stroke that left him able to move only his left eyelid. Trapped in his own body, Bauby ponders the human spirit and explores the limits of his own will and spirit to survive. The adaptation by ‘Pianist’ screenwriter Ronald Harwood steers away from sentimentalisation whilst former painter Schnabel’s direction provides a fascinating insight into world of someone locked in their own body.
