As part of the Cube’s Canada Festival, Nanoplex has put together a wonderful and unique programme of animated shorts for the whole family.
The Cat Came Back / Cordell Barker / 35mm
This hilarious animated short is based on the century-old folk song of the same name. Old Mr. Johnson makes increasingly manic attempts to rid himself of a little yellow cat that just won't stay away...
The Owl who married a goose / Caroline Leaf / CA / 1974 / 8mins / 35mm
In this Inuit legend it is plausible enough that a goose should capture the fancy of an owl and that the owl should be quite bewildered by what follows.
Begone Dull Care / Norman Mclaren / CA / 1949 / 8 mins / 35mm
This animation is drawn directly onto film, creating an explosion in colours and rhythm, accompanied by three pieces of jazz performed by the Oscar Peterson trio.
The Sand Castle / Co Hoedeman / CA / 1977 / 13mins / 35mm
A fable of great humour and appeal, The Sand Castle is the story of the Sandman and the creatures he sculpts out of sand. Under his direction, they build a castle and celebrate the completion of their new home, only to be interrupted by an uninvited guest.
The Big Snit / Richard Condie / CA /1987 / 10mins / 35mm
This wonderfully wacky animation film is a look at two simultaneous conflicts, the macrocosm of global nuclear war and the microcosm of a domestic quarrel, and how each conflict is resolved.
