(Stanley Kubrick / 1964 / USA / 35mm / 96 mins / Cert PG)
Kubrick's classic black comedy of cold-war paranoia was such an accurate depiction of the possibilities of nuclear war that he was investigated by the FBI as a potential spy after its 1965 release. Setting out to make a serious film about the threat of global annihilation, Kubrick realised that the whole business was too absurd to treat as anything other than comedy. Stopping short of including a custard-pie showdown, the film's horror is in its blackly funny look at a world of men who communicate through absurd non-sequiturs and desperate violence - a world where everyone is out for themselves. Very rightly a masterpiece.
