(Todd Haynes / USA / 2007 / 35mm / 135 mins / Cert 15)

In an era bulging with bland biopics of musical heroes and villains, it is refreshing to see a director take new approach, however zany it may seem. Todd Haynes' approach has been to tackle the long-running problem of presenting the multi-faceted cultural changeling that is Bob Dylan by having several actors play him. Whilst such an obvious Brechtian strategy might have had alienating effect on the audience - particularly in the casting of actress Cate Blanchett as one of the Dylans - the film instead is a witty comment on the variety of ways in which Dylan has changed over the years, and an incisive comment on how the differing ways in which he is seen by his legion of fans has made him a universal icon. That there is a different Dylan for every sub-culture is what has made him the uber-icon he has become.
