AXOLOTL
plus the Telescopes and Weyes Bluhd
(Tues 27th/ 8pm/ £5)
San Francisco native Karl Bauer is Axolotl. Crafting trance state drones from violin and electronics, the sound of Axolotl is at once both arresting and soporific; segueing layers of half remembered melodies and dissonant noise into an intoxicating whole that seizes control of the senses. Part of the same contemporary US improv-noise scene that spawned the likes of Black Dice, Sightings, Double Leopards, Yellow Swans, The Skaters and Magik Markers (all of whom Bauer has collaborated with), the sound of Axolotl is at once a welcome and essential addition to the canon of contemporary psychedelic underground. Come and dream.
Once dream pop contemporaries of the likes of Spacemen 3 and the Jesus and Mary Chain, the Telescopes re-emerged in 2002 as something more spaced out and deconstructed. In 2006 the band became a collaboration between Bridget Hayden and founder member Stephen Lawrie. Bridget was a co conspirator of
Vibracathedral Orchestra and can occasionally be found playing with Sunburned Hand Of The Man. Some of her own films, described by Magik Markers' Pete Nolan as "modern day psych genius" will also be accompanying the performance. As a volcanic two piece, The Telescopes spent the year spreading free drone noise around the world, recording all the while. Expect a miasma of psychedelic gush and flow. Sometimes hypnotic and somnolent, sometimes abrasive and rousing, always mesmerising.
...and come early to catch the magic-lantern hallucinations of Philadelphia's Weyes Bluhd. The sound of 'Joe Buck gettin' dosed while Ratso falls down the stairs'.
