This month the 20th Century crew are proud to present what we consider to be one of David Lynch's best films, despite the lack of strange violence, twisted narrative and surreal sex so familiar from 'Lynchland'. As Alvin Straight makes his journey across two states to visit is ailing brother, the road-movie conventions of self-examination and cultural critique are handled with a warmth that is largely absent from the more fuel-injected staples of the genre. Here the American midwest moves at the pace of a lawnmower, the passing of time is handled with dignity and each picket-fenced house contains a warm welcome rather than a simmering psychosis. A true classic of our times.
