A remake of John Waters’ classic of bee-hives and race riots might seem like sacrilege to the trash purist - but the appearance of Waters himself moments into the film flashing a group of young hairdressers should be enough to confirm that the spirit of subversion is as strong as ever in this extravagant musical update. Baltimore looks trashier than ever, whilst the candy-coloured dance routines carry a bitter satirical edge that even the pope of trash himself would be proud of. And if that’s not enough, John Travolta dances with Christopher Walken...in drag. And as hairspray goes, much better for the environment than many other CFC laden brands we could name.
