VERA DRAKE
(Mike Leigh / UK / 2004 / 35mm / 125 mins / Cert 12A)
(Mon 22nd / 8pm / £4/3 )
Organised by Abortion Rights UK to mark the 40th anniversary of the Abortion Act. In 1967 abortion was brought from the back street to legality and into the safety of clinics and hospitals. Until this right was won, women and girls were forced to make dangerous decisions, driven underground to seek illegal abortions from unregulated practitioners. Vera Drake was a more sympathetic abortionist than most, she recognised the desperation of women and girls facing unwanted pregnancies. Pushing back against the political and social anti-abortion attitudes of 1950s England, Vera Drake risks everything to help working class women take back control of their lives.
After the film there will be a brief talk with contributions from Marie Stopes International, Doctors for a Woman's Choice on Abortion and Abortion Rights UK.
