plus Skarabee
Presented by Qu Junktions
(Fri 9th November / 7.30pm / £6)
A real special double-header show for fans of ‘The Song’, featuring two singer/songwriters that break from the voice/guitar tradition, bringing the Kora (TSH) and Kim Harp (NE) into play with thrilling effect. Their sense of mystery and atmosphere is very apparent, and these are musicians that are very much 21st century but rooted in tradition. Exotic but grounded, soaring and meditative, both have that something special.
Nancy Elizabeth writes extraordinarily honest but yearning songs, playing anything from guitar to Celtic harp to Thai Kim to recorder. She has definite grounded British folk influence but her songwriting is being compared to Cat Power and Radiohead in terms of emotional gravitas mixed with fragility. She has just completed her debut album, 'Battle And Victory' for Leaf.
Thee, Stranded Horse is the work of Yann Tabor. His songs stop you in your tracks, his subtle yet his visionary lyrics all beautifully underpinned by his kora and guitar playing. Rustic and slightly demented, he is a gifted young musician with hints of the hypnotic and obsessed Arthur Lee and the sweetness and lightness of touch of a Tim Buckley reverie, all given of a bit of a sub-Saharan African feel. Album out on the excellent Blank Tapes.
Skarabee is improvising guitar looper Stuart Chalmers. Starting from nothing he creates soundscapes of layered guitar, mbira and glockenspiel. This is music without a safety net and pretty as the stars.
