SLEEPING STATES
With support from Freeze Puppy, Husbands, and the Tea and Toast Band
(Saturday 17th / £5 / 8pm)

Sleeping States began as a series of home recordings undertaken by Markland Starkie focusing on the claustrophobia, disassociation, and loneliness inherent to urban living. These recordings were minimal in both volume and arrangement, with Markland’s unique wavering falsetto and melodies taking more of a central role.

Armed with a strong DIY punk ethos, an electric guitar, found sounds, vocal samplers, and an expanded line-up for live performances, Markland has amassed a wealth of material over the past couple of years and has developed a range of ideas within the context of 'the song'; from lovesick ballads, to multi- layered choral drone pieces to acapella pop to off-kilter indie rock. The new long-player, ‘There the Open Places’ has been garnering glowing reviews from all quarters of the independent press.

Sleeping States’ slightly unhinged atmospherics will make perfect, eerie sense to anyone who's ever felt trapped by skyscrapers, concrete, and hoards of human beings.

Support comes from the electro-creole pop of Freeze Puppy, returning after a self-imposed hiatus, debuting new material… along with Brighton’s hyperactive drum’n’synth duo, Husbands and London's Tea and Toast Band.
