plus Stafraenn Hakon + Adam Higton
(Sat 13th / 8pm / £6 adv)
It’s the way she drifts, in music, in life that makes us love her. Baby Dee was one of the stars of this year's Venn Festival. Whether spellbinding audiences with tender harp madrigals or bringing the house down vaudeville style, she is a performer born to captivate. Live - she may sound operatic even ancient at times but she has a sense of fun and a glint of darkness in her eye that subtly twists the audience into hearing things not as they are! A former travelling freak show performer and exuberant and eccentric NYC transvestite artist she has a unique but very real sense of herself. Baby Dee is also a member of the Current 93 live band and has ongoing collaborations with the Italian band Larsen as well as Marc Almond. She is a one off and guaranteed spellbinder.
Plus melancholic and lush rock that weaves atmospheric songs, washes of guitar and electronica into soaring shapes and dusky colours from Icelandic born Ólafur Josephsson, who performs under the name Stafrænn Hákon (sometimes stafraenn hakon, stafrann hakon). Travelling with his band, this is introspective but epic music that calls to mind Múm and Sigur Ros...it must be in the water.
First up is Adam Higton. His v. limited cassette releases have gained him fans in the psych-folk community (My Cat Is An Alien and Fursaxa among them), for his music is at one with itself. Woodland drone and transcendental chime.
