CUBE tv - francois and rozi plain
(tues 31st / 8pm / £2 donation)
This summer the cube presents a series of nights, rethinking the idea of television along its own fractured lines. Born out of a dissatisfaction with commercial scheduling, along with the new possibilities of streamed content and the corresponding desire to open oneself up in an uncontrolled way to something ‘other’. Each night will be scheduled by guest programmers, offering their unique re-imagining of the Reithian principles: inform, educate and entertain. Expect tv episodes, documentaries, short films, music videos, trailers, dvd content…
Cinema as shared social space. A new audiovisual domain is waiting to be explored, where anything goes. Producing a mindset that is open to experience in a way that home viewing can never replicate.
frànçois arrived in the UK from Bordeaux France in Autumn 2003. Armed with a guitar, Kaos pad and a self released album and spurred on by a frustration with the lack of inspiration or like minded souls in his homeland, he immediately threw himself into the Bristol music scene. Early Sunday morning trips to local car-boot sales led to a vast catalogue of old casio keyboards and childrens’ toys soon to become his trademark. For his first Bristol show in early 2004 he took to the stage alone using guitar, live samples, a drum machine and a keyboard - played simultaneously with his guitar via his feet by ingeniously extending the keys with knives. His music was marked by a mix of refreshingly playful and experimental ideas coupled with a natural pop sensibility and gentle bilingual vocals. Meanwhile his beautifully hand-crafted animations and self-produced monthly zines displayed a wider artistic flair that remained true to his idiosyncratic style.
