The Cube welcomes Australian wonder-singer Ned Collette to Bristol for the first time. Joanna Newsom and Camera Obscura have been entralled by his powerful songwriting guided by a baritone voice that recalls Smog or Leonard Cohen. Both invited him to tour the world with them, bringing his music to a larger audience. His album 'Jokes and Trials' is a very special debut - he has the melancholic voice of an outsider, but every song seems to impart a tiny revelation to the listener. Incorporating sparse fingerpicking, dreamy string arrangements and an ear for a turn of melody, he has a gift for writing songs that seem to come into bloom as they run their course. With a background in modern composition, his live performances are unpredictable affairs using samplers and effects to build up his songs. Worth catching now.
