The Invisible Abolitionists and the Slaves who Abolished Slavery

(Thu 8th / 7.30 pm / £2)

March 2007 marks the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade in the British Empire. William Wilberforce, for most of us, is the only name associated with this movement, indicating that the salvation of West African slaves rested on the shoulders of one MP. What of the nation wide abolitionist movement? Why is so little known about this first modern mass political campaign? Slaves are typically represented as brutalized victims of an immoral trade. What of the numerous slave revolts throughout the Caribbean? Did slaves themselves abolish slavery?

Bristol Radical History Group has organized a series of public events to uncover the hidden history of Caribbean slavery. Adam Hochschild, internationally acclaimed writer and author of 'Bury the Chains: Prophets and Rebels in the Fight to Free an Empire's Slaves, a history of the abolition movement in Britain', will be discussing how and why this history has been misrepresented. Richard Hart, renowned Caribbean historian, trade unionist, and author of 'The Slaves Who Abolished Slavery: Blacks in Rebellion', will analyse the impact of armed slave uprisings on the abolition of the slave trade and on slavery itself.

We invite you to join the Bristol Radical History mob in a public discussion with these two eminent historians in order to unravel this hidden history.
