In a career covering over 40 years, Neil Young has gone from being hippie rebel to grunge icon, all the while maintaining a sharp songwriting edge and a formidable iconic status. Despite now being in his 60s he is no less vital and powerful a songwriter and performer.
After suffering a brain aneurism and subsequent surgery in march of 2005, Young’s immediate reaction was not to retire to the country ranch but to get straight back on the wagon and produce his 31st studio album Prairie Wind. Demme’s documentary of the two-night album launch concert at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium is more than a mere record of a concert event – it is an incisive companion piece to the irony and satire of the brilliant album.
