As a precursor to our exploration of the erotic ‘Pinku Eiga’ (Pink Films) of Japan, tonight we bring you a lost classic of the sixties Japanese new wave, Hani Susumu’s ‘Inferno of First Love’. Scripted by controversial enfant terrible, playwright and experimental filmmaker Terayama Shuji, ‘Inferno’ portrays the fumbling affair between Shun, an introverted young boy, and his unlikely soul mate Nanami, a stripper. Capturing the disjointed, giddy abstraction of the first flowerings of love in a beautiful monochrome, ‘Inferno’ is a tender and bold piece of filmmaking.

Holding the distinction to be the first Japanese film to carry an 'X' rating upon its initial US release, usually reserved for hardcore pornography, ‘Inferno of First Love’ also offers a glimpse at the shady underworld of 1960s Japan’s paid S&M floorshows.

A rare screening of a lost gem.
