Unlike her father Sofia Coppola has never been accused of genius, and accordingly her biopic of the legendary cake-eating queen is far from being a heavy weight dissection of life in the 17th century Parisian court of Versailles. Instead, coming on like Barry Lyndon remade by Adam Ant, this frivolous fun fest is a riot of colourful costumes and post-punk pogoing. Whilst it may not tax the brain, it will surely please the eye and stave off thoughts of stale turkey and the Great Escape for several hours to come .
