In the latest of the Cubes Counter Culture events we explore Bristol Community Festival, known locally as Ashton Court Festival which started as a small one-day festival in 1974 before growing to be one of Britain's largest free festival.

Over the years hundreds of local acts performed, as well as Steve Hillage, Mad Professor, Robert Plant, Simple Minds and Portishead.

Ashton Court was a Bristol Institution, yet one that hasn't survived the changes that have regulated and controlled festival culture.

What was it that made an event like Ashton Court festival possible, could it happen now.

Was it a just a small glimpse of a utopia, where everyone is welcome regardless of means, an event that was truly for the community by the community?

In an ever increasing corporate world where Glastonbury has become a playground for the middle classes and many festivals charging ever increasing entrance fees what can we learn from the history of Ashton Court Festival.

Richard Jones, who was a member of the management committee of Ashton Court Free Festival from 1987-1993, will explore the early days of the Festival and its counter-culture legacy.
