Shorkk presents Lebanon on Screen, an evening of film, food and conversation on 18th September at the Cube cinema Bristol, fundraising to support Jibal's relief work in Lebanon.
The directors of the four short films we are screening for the fist time in Bristol have generously shared their work with us, centring Lebanese voices and perspectives. The films bring a deeper understanding of how the rhythms of life in Lebanon are punctuated, and sometimes entirely altered, by war.
Through these four shorts, we encounter phone-camera footage of the empty space where a home once stood; women chatting surrounded by branches of lemon blossom interrupted by jets overhead; monsters and superheroes bringing moments of light relief in a city marked by war; and voices from the south of Lebanon, filmed in 1993, that continue to ring true today.
Following the screenings, Farrah Berrou, director of Buffer Zone, will update us on the constantly changing situation in Lebanon.
Doors open at 6.00pm, when you'll have the chance to enjoy a glass of Lebanese wine, available to purchase before the films begin at 6.30pm. The Cube's bar will also be open throughout the evening, serving alcoholic and soft drinks.
The evening ends with a vegetarian Lebanese meal and finishes at approximately 8.30pm.
