A visually opulent telling of the life and times of the notorious libertine, from the legendary director of La Dolce Vita, with the Oscar-winning costume design by Danilo Donati.
Loosely adapted from Casanova’s memoirs, the film follows the infamous Italian womanizer as he escapes imprisonment in Venice and heads off on a debauched tour of the European courts.
Working entirely on the vast soundstages of Rome’s Cinecittà Studios, director Federico Fellini recreates 18th-century Europe on sets at once sumptuous and flagrantly artificial. The story unfolds as a series of tableaux, with at their centre actor Donald Sutherland in a performance both compelling and suggestive of the hollowness at Casanova’s core.
