Q presents JOANNA NEWSOM, whose the debut Bristol appearance earlier this year showcased this 21-year-old’s unlikely power to captivate a room by expertly plucking a (huge) harp and singing a strange, sweet song. Now she returns, her profile in soaring ascendance, but the same simple set-up in place. Having grown up in Nevada City digesting all manner of inspirational sounds from Donovan to Billie Holiday, Joanna’s unique songwriting abilities, along with her rare dexterity as a harpist and that truly astonishing voice (transmitted, it seems, from the elfin otherworld perhaps only Bjork can claim to cohabit), have enraptured an ever-burgeoning community of spellbound listeners including Will Oldham, Devandra Banhart and Cat Power - each of whom she has supported on tour. Her current album ‘The Milk Eyed Mender’ is a patchwork of homestead yet boldly experimental bluegrass and beautifully skewed, tangential lyrical muse: a record bathed in the glory of the verdant imagination at the disposal of this remarkable young composer.
