While we wait until we are finally allowed to bring Kelly Reichardt’s latest The Mastermind to our screen, we revisit where her singular voice first began.
Set between Miami and the edges of the Everglades, River of Grass follows Cozy (Lisa Bowman), a restless housewife, and Lee Ray (Larry Fessenden), a drifting handyman, whose chance meeting sparks a misfired gunshot, and a flight from a crime that never quite was.
Described by Reichardt as “a road movie without the road, a love story without the love, and a crime film without the crime,” her assured debut slyly toys with and upends the conventions of ‘a girl and a gun’ genre expectations.
What emerges is a droll and quietly haunting portrait of thwarted desire and small-town inertia, a sign of the precision, empathy, and wry humour that would define her later work.
We screen The Mastermind on Friday 28th November, tickets available on Headfirst
Doors open 30 minutes before advertised start time. All film screenings are ad-free and 18+ unless otherwise stated, and start with no more than a 10 min selection of trailers.
