When TV legend Dave Chapelle's popular daily show was comissioned for a third series, he decided to celebrate by throwing a free party for his friends and fans. Taking place on the corner of Quincy and Downing in Brooklyn New York, his 'block party' featured a roster of prime American talent, including Kanye West, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, Dead Prez, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, the Roots, Cody ChesnuTT, Big Daddy Kane, and - reunited for their first performance in over seven years - the Fugees. Possibly the smartest move Chapelle made was involving French film-whizz Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine) to film the proceedings. Applying his inventive flair to the documentary method means that the resulting film is less a mere account of what happened than an examination of the Chapelle phenomenon and his relevance in contemprary Afro-American culture.
