The Urbane Leg-Ends presents:
doors open: 19:30 | event starts: 20:00
-
Thu 6 November // 20:00
Tickets: £3 (watchers) | £ free (tellers)
This night of storytelling may begin with:
'Here is a story! Story it is.' (Yorubaland)
Or: 'Once, in the old days, when tigers smoked.' (Korea)
Or: 'Beyond seven mountains, beyond seven forests.' (Poland)
Or: 'There was and there was not.' (Arabian Peninsula)
It may end with: 'And if they didn't die, they're still alive today.' (Germany)
And in between, tales-within-tales-within-tales of tricksters tricked; gods otherworldly; animals worldly-wise; fates dreadful; erotics transgressive; quests comic; horrors unnameable; punishments painful; circumstances dire; temptations irresistible; tales cautionary; times troubling; moralities uncompromising; odysseys fantastical; and annoyances everyday.
ALL TOLD BY YOU!
-
Are you an apprentice of the storyteller's craft? An early-stage teller who would like to find work-in-progress performance opportunities? Someone who has had a little training or a little experience and would like to practise in a safe, welcoming and compassionate environment? Would you like to bring a tale to the red velvet curtained interior of the CUBE?
In this night of storytelling for all and by all, we celebrate the oral tradition of folkloric storytelling as an inclusive, social and cultural activity - no true stories, but tales of wonder (folktales, fairy stories, fables, myths, and urban legends).
A sort of open mic-ish/storytelling circle-ish night for tellers, we invite you to take to the stage and share your tale; or, if shy or cursed to beastly transformation when in front of an audience under an ethereal moon, submit a short film of yourself performing, to be screened on the night.
Whether well-rehearsed retellings of well-loved classics or slightly raggedy renditions of stories new; whether collected from 'anon' and the dead or started from scratch by you, the teller. Whether lovely, sweet and funny; playful and charming; unexpectedly moving; wondrously subversive; odd and unsettling; deceitful and malicious; or brutal and gory.
-
And for audiences, sit back and enjoy a shared evening of high spirits, elaborate flights of fancy and colourful language, as a multitude of tellers delve deep into legends and lore from all over the world, journey into wondrous lands and dark woods of the mind - whose boundaries are that of dreams or of nightmares - and transport you to an elsewhere beyond the here and now.
