We preface Sav Rodger’s Chasing Chasing Amy with the film that inspired it all – Kevin Smith’s infamous “queer” rom-com returns to the big screen as part of this year’s Queer Vision Film Festival.
When cult comic book artist Holden McNeil (Ben Affleck) falls head over heels for the perfect woman, Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams), he is dismayed when she reveals herself to be a… dun dun dun… lesbian!!
Admirably, he convinces himself to still make a go of it and keep seeing Alyssa with only the best intentions. This upsets his petulant best friend/colleague Banky Edwards (Jason Lee) who fears she will supersede him and single-handedly raze their comic book enterprise to the ground.
Kevin Smith’s out-loud rumination on the consequences of toxic masculinity has divided queer and straight audiences since its release in 1997, yet this unmistakable high point in his View Askewniverse is significantly more introspective than his previous slacker comedies, showing growth as a filmmaker, whilst assuring his status as a '90s cult icon.
