Clash Magazine
The Duke Spirit's frontwoman, Liela Moss, has established herself as a powerful and versatile singer in her collaborations and solo work. With an ethereal upper register and smoky lower tones, Leila is one of the most potent voices in the UK music scene. She weaves an impassioned spell with her dramatic and captivating music, shapeshifting and mutating any number of styles, from bluesy rock, electronic music, and dream pop, to lush, string-laden ballads, into her own distinct sound. Moss is an artist with something to say and a distinctive way of saying it.
'Moss's commanding stage presence is truly unmatched.'

Liela Moss (pronounced Lee-La) has fronted UK band The Duke Spirit since their inception in 2003. The band has released five albums and four EPs worldwide. Known for their ferocious live shows and relentless touring schedule, they're a band that has long trod their own road.
As a solo artist, she has released three critically acclaimed solo albums on the Bella Union record label, and a fourth is on the way in 2024.
Liela is truly one of the UK's most treasured and arresting frontwomen, with her energetic live performances being a strong part of her musical identity. 'At her most commanding, it feels like there is no more magnetic front woman in the country' (The Guardian).
Liela has enjoyed huge UK and US radio attention and appeared on multiple US and UK TV shows, including The Late Show With David Letterman, The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, The Conan O'Brian Show, Last Call With Carson Daily, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and Later... With Jools Holland.
Liela is a regular collaborator with electro pioneers UNKLE, and wrote and performed the songs Mayday on 2007's War Stories, The Dog Is Black on 2011's Only The Lonely, Sunrise on 2017's The Road Pt 1, and Feel More/With Less and Sun (The) on 2019's The Road Pt 2.
In 2012, the song Creature was penned especially for the Batman: Arkham City soundtrack. Moss sang a duet with Emmylou Harris on the 2012 Nick Cave soundtrack to the John Hillcoat film Lawless.
She sang on the 2010 album Mean Old Man by Jerry Lee Lewis. She also featured on two songs on the soundtrack of 2013 Warner Bros.'s film Beautiful Creatures by TheNewNo2. She has performed live with Scottish legends The Jesus And Mary Chain at the Southbank Centre, singing their classic Just Like Honey.
Known for commanding not only the attention of the music community but also the fashion world, Liela has performed in NYC during Spring Fashion Week, where she played live at the Y-3 Adidas show. Designer Philip Lim has cited Liela Moss as his 'modern muse', and the late Alexander McQueen was so enchanted by Moss and her style that she served as the inspiration for McQ For Target, his 2009 fashion line. Moss has been featured in most of the leading fashion magazines.
She has performed at every major UK and European festival, including high-profile slots at Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds, Isle Of Wight, Bestival, T In The Park, Primavera Sound, Benicassim, SXSW, Download, and All Points West. She has toured with bands such as Queens Of The Stone Age, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, REM, Jane's Addiction, Incubus, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and Mercury Rev, as well as many headline tours of the UK, Europe, US, and Australia.
2018 saw Moss release her first solo album, entitled Your Name Is Safe In My Mouth, released on Bella Union Records. Recorded in rural Somerset and produced by partner Toby Butler, Moss performed at many UK summer festivals, including Glastonbury.
'A sumptuous set of gloriously gloomy ballads that emphasise Moss's expressiveness as a vocalist.'
Uncut Magazine (on My Name Is Safe In Your Mouth, 2018)
Summer 2020 saw Liela release her second solo album, Who The Power, via Bella Union Records. Released at the height of the COVID 'lockdown', lead track Atoms At Me was playlisted at BBC Radio 6 Music.
In January 2023, Liela released her third solo record, Internal Working Model, a daring, often dark return with a potent, personal edge, which enjoyed great critical success, with MOJO Magazine calling it 'a record of rare ambition and thematic complexity' and Record Collector saying it was 'an impassioned career high from a committed, commanding voice’.
★★★★☆
'A dark, sophisticated album from an artist who continues to produce thoughtful, enthralling music of depth and beauty.'
Under The Radar Magazine (on Internal Working Model, 2023)
Described as a swaggering snake of a track, and reminiscent of Nadine Shah's recent work and prime PJ Harvey, Liela's new track Reward, released May 2024 on Mother Figure Records, melts together indie themes with savage electronica. It pulses with woozy synths, distorted beats, emotive lyricism, and Moss's commanding vocal. Reward is the first of a collection of singles due for release this year, culminating in the short October UK tour.
