TOUGH SELL presents

Monster Show by Hester Stefan Chillingworth

-
Sat 20 April // 19:00

Tickets: £12 standard / £8 concession

As the iconic 1931 film Frankenstein plays silently in the background, a lone creature stands on stage to perform the live score. From deep inside a frankly ridiculous costume, they attempt the impossible task of delivering the entire soundtrack using just one voice. Dialogue, sound effects, music, everything.

Monster Show is an uncompromising attempt to re-dub every moment of audio from this black and white horror classic. It's a trans act of purging outdated narratives, championing radical bodies and being many things at once. And it is alive.

Monster Show is part 1 of The Extinction Trilogy.

Commissioned by Norwich Arts Centre,Colchester Arts Centre and Old Diorama Arts Centre. Originally co-commissioned by Cambridge Junction (with support from the Stobbs New ideas Fund) and Old Diorama Arts Centre. Additional support from LIFT and Arts Council England.

TOUGH SELL says:
We've followed Hester Stefan's work for some time (they were at the helm of the infamous and excellently-named performance company GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN), so we're just thrilled to be bringing their playful, smart, mischievous solo work to Bristol. And what more fitting place than The Cube to have this show explode an iconic piece of classic cinema? This is the first part of an epic new trilogy of work exploring extinction, transness, and the limits of representation for the human body.

Praise for previous work:
"powerfully and unashamedly clever” WhatsOnStage
"Super smart... I couldn’t take my eyes off it.” Matt Trueman, Culture Wars
"Smart, brave and rebellious.” Exeunt
"A startling, dramatic and oddly moving performance. Brilliantly simple, clear and economical in its construction it nonetheless becomes something much more complex in its execution." Lone Twin
"a strange, wild and oddly readable bit of art.” Postcards from the Gods
