Malick's magic-hour paean to American Pastoral makes a welcome return to the big screen in a lush 4K restoration. The melodramatic aspects of the story - a love triangle centred on a group of migrant workers in the Texas panhandle in the early 20th century - is tempered by the dreamy visuals, inspired by the paintings of Vermeer and Edward Hopper and vividly brought to life by the award winning cinematography of new-wave lensman Néstor Almendros.
As poetic a film ever made about the nobility of the American working class, the film boasts career best performances from Richard Gere and Brooke Shields, and secured Malick's reputation as a prime auteur, though it would be over twenty years before he would make another feature.
