When journalist Mstyslav Chernov became trapped in the port city of Mariupol during the siege by Russian armed forces, he and his colleagues chose to continue documenting the conflict at first hand, despite the many dangers they faced. The resulting film is an unflinching and matter-of-fact account of life-during-wartime as viewed from the front line. Bleak but essential viewing, Chernov's visceral documentary offers an immersive view of conflict that few filmmakers have achieved...or would ever want to.
20 Days in Mariupol is a timely reminder that the conflict in Ukraine is still ongoing, despite its having largely drifted out of the main focus of media attention in recent months - in February the Cube will mark the second anniversary of the conflict with a short season of classic Ukraininan films.
